Having spent 15 years in a medical school environment, I’ve come to appreciate the intricacies and unique challenges that they face.
Many medical schools use Canvas, one of the most widely-used learning management systems (LMS) in higher education. Canvas offers robust tools for faculty and directors, however their focus on K-12 and traditional university programs mean that they often don’t include granular details that are essential for medical schools. This is where One45 fills the gap.
The challenge: Bridging the gap between Canvas and medical school needs
Canvas is a powerful LMS known for its extensive capabilities. However, for specific requirements such as detailed learning event data, facilitator information, LCME compliance, curriculum mapping, and precise faculty reporting, medical schools require supplementary tools in order to capture this information.
The challenge? Seamlessly integrating and maintaining the synchronicity of two systems, ensuring consistency, and staying updated.
Our solution: A tailored Canvas integration for One45
To address these challenges, we developed a custom Canvas integration for One45. Harnessing the power of Canvas APIs, we’ve managed to align Canvas data with One45. Our Canvas alignment tool streamlines the process, ensuring:
- Easy Mapping: Curriculum events in Canvas are effortlessly mapped to those in One45.
- Data Consistency: The tool identifies and rectifies inconsistencies and incomplete data.
- Facilitator Alignment: Ensures accurate facilitator information for each learning event.
For courses, sessions, and sections, our tool automatically matches learning events if the names between Canvas and One45 coincide. If there’s a discrepancy, you can manually map events, which then reflect the Canvas data in One45. Once this initial mapping is set, the tool ensures continuous synchronization of dates, times, locations, and event names.
Facilitator alignment: A closer look
Aligning facilitators between the two systems presents a unique challenge. Canvas doesn’t recognize multiple facilitators or specific facilitator roles within a course. However, by leveraging custom signifiers and adding that information to a specific location in Canvas, our tool extracts facilitator information from Canvas events, displaying the corresponding facilitator in any mapped event. This feature allows users to pinpoint any disconnect between the two systems and provides real-time notifications when Canvas data undergoes changes.
