Incorporating equity into assessment design and delivery, as well as other admissions practices begins with the understanding that multiple characteristics such as race, class, gender, and others “intersect” with one another and overlap. Intersectionality, then, is a metaphor for understanding how multiple forms of inequality or disadvantage compound themselves to create obstacles that are not understood within conventional ways of thinking about anti racism, feminism, or social justice advocacy strategies.
